Welcome to Rock Type 1: Empowering individuals with type 1 diabetes

What is type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes (formerly known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes) occurs when one’s own immune system attacks the beta cells in the pancreas. It is not known what triggers this autoimmune response. Type 1 diabetes is not caused by lifestyle factors, such as being overweight, inactive, or eating unhealthy foods. However, lifestyle factors play a very significant role in the effective management of type 1 diabetes. Effective type 1 diabetes management also requires vigilant monitoring of blood glucose levels. If one’s blood glucose level drops too low, it can be life threatening. If it runs too high, it can cause very serious long-term health effects. Individuals with type 1 diabetes require synthetic insulin in order to survive. At this time, there is no cure for type 1 diabetes.

What is Rock Type 1?

Rock Type 1 is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of those with type 1 diabetes through exercise and education. When our son Liam was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 7, we made a promise to him that he would be able to continue doing all of the things that he had been doing before his diagnosis, including rock climbing. As a result of remaining active, he continues to be a strong, healthy kid, despite the challenges presented by his medical condition. There are so many individuals with type 1 diabetes who are accomplishing amazing things while managing this chronic medical condition. Through Rock Type 1, we hope to shine a light on some of these individuals, and we strive to encourage and empower others who might be hesitant to push themselves physically. Through our events, we aim to build a stronger sense of community among those affected by type 1 diabetes.

Hi! I’m Liam Scott. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 7. I am aware how lucky I have been to have access to the supplies I need to keep myself healthy. There are so many people who have limited or no access to the insulin and glucose testing supplies that they need just to survive, especially in limited resource countries. Through generous donations from the type 1 diabetes community, I have collected and forwarded over $100,000 worth of insulin and other supplies to Insulin for Life-USA. They provide insulin and other supplies to limited resource countries and emergency supplies to areas affected by natural disasters in the U.S. and around the world. They are saving the lives of people with type 1 diabetes every single day. I am proud to have played a very small part in the incredibly important work they are doing. If you would like to make a donation to Insulin for Life-USA, please visit their website. Contributions are tax deductible. Thank you to everyone who has supported Insulin for Life-USA and their life-saving mission!
